My grandma had a spice drawer. Most people have a spice rack, but my Puerto Rican grandmother had a large drawer filled to the brim with cumin, garlic, sazon, and hundreds of others.

There was, however, one spice container that she left out of the drawer, on top of the stove light.

It was a spice container with a label that read: LOVE.

Yes, she sprinkled love into every meal.

As a child, I realized it was silly, but I was also wildly charmed by the idea.

As an adult, I follow her footsteps. (Not in the kitchen—lord help us all!—but when I cook up podcast episodes.)

I sprinkle love into each show because they’re all created by me, to empower you.

Yesterday I dropped an episode about Stopping Negative Talk (and the hidden anxiety pressures of building a business).

If I could have, I wouldn’t have sprinkled love, but broke the seal and SLATHERED love all over each word.

If you’ve ever wondered how to relieve anxiety (or anxious thoughts) or you experience worry rumination (thinking everything could go wrong), >>THIS<< episode is for you.

Well, it was for me…and you.

I created this show because I am documenting the process of breaking generations of anxiety, not just for the memory of my grandmother, but for my daughter’s future.

I want her to be able to build her dreams (be it a business, family, foundation, or a lemonade stand) without the presence of negative self talk and anxiety.

I’d love for you to watch yesterday’s show >>HERE on YouTube<< because I’d love to connect with you in the comments.

Let me know you’re there…I’d love to personally say hi, and thanks for journeying together.

Sprinkled with Love,

Just look at the numbers, she said. Like always, our COO, Jade, was her logical, forthright, unnervingly calm self when she stated the truth.

Despite my best efforts, I couldn’t argue. (You can’t argue with data!)

Last December, I took a two-week break from social media, which empowered me to reflect on my goals, ambition, and performance.

When it comes to social media, I have a love/hate relationship…it’s undisputedly the most powerful free marketing, but it also feels like I have to work twice as hard for half the results.

I spend copious amounts of time planning, creating, and sharing content on every social platform, and it’s not just an investment of money, but of time.

I spent most of 2023 pivoting my content (style, topics, and creative), which, well, sucked. I know(!!) what type of content performs best (dancing, entertainment, casual), but I decided that I didn’t want to create that type of content anymore.

Making that type of content felt like it was sucking the blood from me. And not in the Edward Cullen way.

So—after mega shifts in my content creation and ideation—I spent the year posting with dwindling numbers.

Despite my best efforts, my new entrepreneurial content just couldn’t compete with my edutainment (entertaining + education) content.

But I was okay with that. Even though engagement plummeted and my following shrank, I didn’t care. They weren’t customers, they were passive viewers.

And THAT? That matters.

I didn’t set out to be popular on social media, I was/am focused on being profitable.

But then a crazy thing happened…I posted a random splash of oddly personal posts that performed better than anything the prior month.

And it made me cringe.

Just look at the numbers, Jade said, people are telling you what they want to see more of.

While I don’t have a new strategy locked in (yet), I’m sharing this to document the tenuous balance between continuing doing the same thing, versus trying something new.

As I’m gearing up for a new launch next month, I’m reminding myself that the new content I’m creating might not be the most popular, but if it results in profitability, then I’m on the right track.

Speaking of my new launch, are you signed up for the Insider’s List? It’s a weekly email I’m sending during the launch/promo period to give you a behind-the-scenes look at what happens (in real time) during a launch and the results we get.

If you want to experience my new marketing endeavors (pivots and all), sign up >>HERE<<.

Looking at the numbers,

Growing up, I was one of those strange kids who acted like an adult. I mean, sure, I played with kids, but I was my truest self around adults.

When my parents hosted dinner parties, I sat at the table and shared my opinion without missing a beat. When my parents had discussions about our family, I sat like a third partner and weighed in. I was once kicked out of Sunday school because I openly told the teacher that I knew more about the subject matter (to this day, I maintain that I did!).

So, yeah, I acted like an adult and cared about adult things, often times at odds with my parents.

One major place of contention was our front yard. My dad worked three or four jobs at a time, and my mother homeschooled five children, so a manicured lawn was the least of their concerns.

But not mine. I hated that our house was one of the shabbiest on the block.

We couldn’t afford a lawn mower, but my dad bought a push mower from a garage sale that he occasionally used. When it started collecting rust, I pulled it to the front yard and heaved my preteen body against the handle to get it to move. Four hours later, we’d have a trim lawn.

When I think back to this experience, I sum up my weird childhood decision to mow the lawn as the following: **I CARED HOW THINGS LOOK. I still do.

So imagine my cringe when I look at my current YouTube channel…all these years later and I think to myself, Do I have the shabbiest house on YouTube street?!?

I’ve been taking time to rethink and strategize my video creation approach (aka your girl is busting out her video hand mower), and wanted to share insights into a conversation I had with my friend and YouTube guru, Evan Carmichael.

I recently asked him two questions:

  1. Should I start a new YouTube channel from scratch? (I started the channel years ago as a photographer, so a lot of my subscribers might not be interested in my new content.); and
  2. Should I focus on a specific length of video? (I currently post three YouTube shorts, one video about 12 minutes in length, and one video 45-60 minutes in length per week).

If you click on the most popular videos on my channel, you’ll see they have NOTHING to do with what I am doing today…I also took a two year break from creating YouTube videos which stands as one of my biggest business regrets. Ever. I shouldn’t have stopped creating and, instead, shifted the momentum to my new business endeavors.

I mean, Y’ALL, this header needs a makeover…

And, lastly, I’ll be honest and admit that seeing these stats compared to my old stats are deflating to say the least (hundreds of thousands vs. hundreds). We’re pouring SO much time and resources into creating videos and it sometimes feels frustrating to see so little traction.

But I refuse to repeat the same mistake I made in the past: I will not stop making videos (even if the results aren’t favorable right now),…but—this time—I’ll be regularly assessing my efforts.

Here’s notes from my call with Evan…I shared them with my content team, and I’m sharing with them you so we can learn together.

  • Don’t start a new channel…showing the journey about my pivots can be powerful overtime.
  • He said that I should be documenting the struggle of creating high quality content just for a few hundred views…then once the account blows up (his words) we can show proof of consistency.
  • He said our thumbnails are disastrous (LOL). Maybe we can use AI to make them more engaging?
  • Our first benchmark when it comes to assessing our efforts: What percentage of people are watching past one minute. An editor KPI should be to focus on increasing that number each month.
  • We NEED to have a trailer/bumper/preview before all our long form content in order to convince people to keep watching.
  • Our YT content should be made assuming every viewer is a new viewer…we must sell people on why to watch and immediately offer a power punch benefit/promise within the first minute.
  • Our goal should be to post at least one hour video per week. And BE CONSISTENT. That should be our bare minimum. We can/should create short videos and while they won’t move the needle too much for us now, it could be amazing for layering to create long videos around a theme later…BUT that needs to be our commitment.

I’m sharing this for two reasons: 1. I’m documenting the journey; and 2. To encourage you to keep creating…if not for immediate results, then for our future success.

To hand-mowing our lawns,

j*

It’s time to flip the script, boo. While others can brag about getting 10k followers, I’m a fan of getting ONE.AT.A.TIME.

I’m a huge fan of slow, authentic, organic growth.

  • I never want to go viral.
  • I don’t wanna be popular.
  • I’m don’t aspire to be an influencer.

I am here to connect and serve you well.

>>When people ask for my best social media advice, this is all I got: GO DEEP, NOT WIDE.<<

So how do you build engagement organically while building real, genuine relationships?

  1. Take time to respond to every comment. Think of Instagram as a Cocktail Party… If someone walked up to you and said, “Love your shoes!” you wouldn’t just look at them and walk away, right? Speak to your followers like you would in person.
  2. Give the engagement you want to get. This means if you want people to leave a comment, go leave 10! So many people complain about their lack of engagement but never share the IG love on other people’s posts. The algorithm isn’t out to get you, boo.
  3. Read someone’s caption and offer a thoughtful response. Have you ever received a comment that is just a string of random emojis and thought, “How do I respond to that?” or better yet, “Is that a bot?” Don’t be that commenter, friend! Start real conversations.

I show up on Instagram and Facebook live every single week. Not for thousands, but I talk to ONE person.

>>This type of engagement shows people that I care, that I’m real, and more than anything it changes the relationship between me and my followers because my business leads with value and service.<<

When you connect with people, share your time, and give your insight, it proves you’re there for them…not just you.

Do you agree? Ready to start creating connections one by one? Leave a comment on this post and let me know if you found this strategy helpful!

I wasn’t the girl who played dress up and dreamt of a pink Barbie car. I wasn’t the girl who planned her wedding at 11 years old. I wasn’t even the girl who hoped for a life outside of a 9-5 job, even though I desperately dreamed of such. I’ve lived my life carefully partitioned between what was safe and secure (which landed me in law school, locking my creativity in a box and stifling my soul), until I let myself dream. Out loud.

After marrying my best friend (and high school sweetheart) in 2005, he gifted me a camera. I unwrapped the box, but what I didn’t realize then was that I also unwrapped my dreams. With little experience, no training, but a lot of heart, I set out to become a photographer…and that’s precisely what happened.

Since the inception of my business, I’ve photographed hundreds of weddings, traveled the world to document nuptials, made memories to last a lifetime, and voted Top 10 Wedding Photographers in the World by American Photo Magazine. For the first time in my life, I let my dreams steer me toward my hopes and it resulted in taking a risk I’m proud of.

Today I’m an international wedding photographer living in Southern California with my husband, JD, and our dog, Polo. Together we shoot weddings and ensure your first day as husband and wife is etched in your hearts as the best day of your lives.

I’d be honored to chat more about your wedding, so feel free to visit my website or simply email me for more information.
